Whether it is done by your dentist or a trained technician elsewhere, this practice is a big industry. Even though America is leading the way with superstar teeth, we Brits have more than caught on to the idea and over the past decade there has been an increase the amount of teeth-whitening treatments available.
Teeth Whitening
When I told friends I was having my teeth whitened they were excited for me, until I revealed it wouldn't be my dentist who was carrying it out. "People sometimes worry about getting their teeth whitened at a salon – but it is just because a small number of disreputable people, who haven't been properly trained, have ruined the reputation of teeth whitening," said Emma Carpenter, my Teethwhite technician.

Trained by a UK dentist and fully qualified and insured, Emma is not only reassuring, but her sparkling smile is also a persuasive advert for the company. She is a mobile technician and works from Broommill Day Spa once a month.

So down to the teeth whitening...the company offers two types – at-home whitening kits and the laser whitening. If you opt for laser whitening, the at-home kit is included in the price, to bring your smile to its optimum whiteness. I had a recent check-up from my dentist, completed a medical questionnaire and I booked in for the laser treatment, so I was good to go.

Emma first put a lip retractor in my mouth, it looks unattractive, but its purpose is to keep your tongue and lips away from your teeth during the procedure. Although the mouth guard is not what I'd call comfortable – in fact it is the worst part of the treatment – it certainly doesn't hurt. A brand-new mouth guard and brushes are used for each client, and every item comes clean and sealed.

Next Emma painted on a paste gum protector which goes hard and stops the gel, used for whitening, from harming my gums. Then the whitening solution was applied and a light placed in front of my mouth. Emma set her timer for 10 minutes, then the solution was removed and re-applied – this process is repeated three times. A few mouth rinses later and the laser section of my treatment was over. Emma gave me her mobile number in case I had any problems and I was instructed not to eat any food with high pigmentation for the following 24-48 hours. Later at home, using my kit, I moulded myself some customised mouth trays and with the gel applied I wore them for a couple of hours. They weren't too bad, but having house-guests would be a bad idea as this is not a good look.

So how does it work? Teethwhite claim that the solution will remove most stains with a gentle 'sustained release action' which bleaches stains within your teeth. This does not damage the teeth as the ingredient penetrates the enamel and acts on the dentine inside to break down organic deposits. Because of this, some people may experience sensitivity during or after the treatment.

The results are quite impressive, and although I've not noticed anyone popping on sunglasses to look at me, it has definitely given me the confidence to smile properly in photographs, which is quite an achievement.
